Member Question of the Week - 01.31.12

One of my best employees just showed up to a shift with bright blue hair. We don't have a written policy on this, but it's not the image I want to convey to the public. Anyone else run into this? What can I do?

Do you have a written policy on dress code? Does it mention looking respectable and dressing in neat/clean clothing? If so, sit them down and talk to them about changing their hair color back. You can also write a policy and explain to them that they have a certain amount of time to change their hair color.

Hum, I bet you money (depending on what age he is) his parent probably told him that this new look was a death sentence for his job. I would recommend policies and proceedures about this. Here are a couple of thing that is list in my proceedures.

1. No, holes in clothing.
2. No dating co-workers
3. No body piercing
4. No multi color hair look.
5. All employees must be at work 10 minsa for turn over.
6. All employees go through CPR training.

Our company does have a policy about natural colored hair, and we are not permitted to wear hats. So if one of my people came in with this, they would be sent home until it is fixed. I agree with Cheryl, talk with him/her, say "you are one of my best employees and even though it's not a policy, I would expect better." or something to that effect. You probably cannot force them to change their hair, but empower the employee to make the right decision.

my staff are college students so i never know what their hair is going to look like. i am sure it will grow out or they will change it again. i think if they are a good employee that trumps the hair. my policy is as long as they don't come in with pants with holes or tears, pants that are pulled up and their staff shirt/jacket/hoodie and a few other things, that is fine. maybe offer him a rink hat to wear if you have any and maybe he will wear it. i am not sure if i could force someone to do som Read More
